Everyone wants to know what that magical food is that helps you lose weight, well guess what…there actually is such thing. And you can buy it at your local grocery store, it’s called a Grapefruit.
Grapefruits have such fantastic health benefits that so many people are unaware of. Here are a few of the benefits:
Vitamin C: Grapefruit is bursting with vitamin C; a mere half of a grapefruit provides 46.86 mg, or 78.1 percent, of the recommended daily value. Grapefruit is an excellent source of this antioxidant, which supports cardiovascular health by preventing the oxidation of cholesterol. In addition, consuming vitamin C-rich foods supports the immune system, and leads to reduced risk of death from heart disease, cancer and stroke, says the site.
Pectin Fiber: The soluble pectin fiber contained in grapefruit may slow down the development of atherosclerosis. The World’s Healthiest Foods says that eating grapefruit can lower blood levels of LDL cholesterol–considered the “bad,” or harmful, cholesterol– as well as your levels of triglycerides, a form of fat linked to heart disease. Some scientific evidence supports grapefruit’s cholesterol-reducing properties. Although grapefruit is a good source of fiber, the fruit is low in calories, with a half of a grapefruit containing a modest 36 calories.
Vitamins and Minerals: Grapefruit is a great source of vitamin A, Vitamin A is necessary for healthy vision and for the maintenance of teeth and skeletal and soft tissue. The World’s Healthiest Foods states that grapefruit is also a good source of folate, or vitamin B9–crucial for brain function and for production of genetic material such as DNA and RNA– as well as potassium, essential to heart function and smooth muscle contraction.

Amazing right?! (Some people who are on certain medications are not allowed to eat grapefruit, if you’re on med’s and don’t know whether you can or not, be sure to ask for doc before eating grapefruit.) Now you know what you can eat every morning after you drink your warm lemon water, before you go to yoga! (Ps. they have 6am classes that you can do before work!!)
The Perfect Breakfast
– 1/2 of a red grapefruit
– 1 boiled egg
– 1/4 of a lemon sliced
– cup of warm water
Directions: pour warm water into a pretty mug and sqeeze a 1/4 of a lemon into it. Boil one egg (cover egg in water, turn to high for 17 minutes). Slice half a grapefruit. (Reminder: for those quick mornings, have hard boiled eggs prepared ahead of time, ready in the fridge.)
One of the easiest breakfasts I make, yet one of my all time favourites. (Feel free to cook a poached egg instead of hard boiled if you like that better.)
Once you’ve had your breakfast, you’re ready to go shopping at the market, or to your friends pool, or maybe shopping on Mill St. in Elora… and you need a hat to complete your outfit!! Hats always make a cute outfit just that much cuter. I know everyone looks different in hats so you must always try them on, and it could take you awhile to find the perfect hat (that’s why you must start the hunt now). Look everywhere, Target, Forever 21, Roots, little random shops… I promise, you’ll eventually find a hat you love.
Cute right?! The hat in the top picture, and the hat with the black and white ribbon were at a little shop in Oakville on the main street, where they were having a sidewalk sale. They were $19. The hat with the black ribbon is from Giant Tiger for $9.99. Straw hat with the pink ribbon I bought from Forever 21 for $10. You can buy hats for a super good price as long as you search around. Hats are quite often on sale in August at the end of the summer season so keep an eye out.
If you’re looking for somewhere to wear your cute hat, or maybe your latest sun dress, check out the Old Marina Restaurant on Puslinch Lake and have a yummy lunch on the patio with friends or family. Taking time to have lunch or dinner with friends and family can be so important. Appreciate everyday we have, and who we have those days with. Who knows what tomorrow will bring, enjoy right now with the people who mean the most to you. My mom, Grandma and I went to the Old Marina Restaurant for lunch and it was so nice spending the day with them.
So now you have another great breakfast to eat before yoga. Appreciate the small things in life…looking cute in a hat, while hanging out with your Grandma. Nothing beats it.
“don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today.”
